Rescue Dog: Sparky

30 Jun

Sparky's has little control over his back legs & cannot walk properly.

Sparky is an example of how dogs can teach us so much about overcoming adversity, living life to the fullest and sheer joy.

SCBR was contacted about a paralyzed English Bulldog by one of the local shelters.  It was a shelter we had a long history with, so we took their word on it.  When our volunteers arrived, they saw that he was not an English Bulldog, but they also saw what a dire situation he was in and we decided to make an exception for him and bring him in to rescue to help him.

Sparky loves life and loves his toys!

He had been abandoned by his owners at just over one year of age.  He has a deformity of his back

legs where they lay flat against the ground.  Sparky has very little muscle tone or control of his back legs.

We believe that he was a “Flat” or “Swimmer” pup”, which means that he was born with especially weak abductor muscles.  This likely could have been corrected at an early age with proper therapy to build his legs but Sparky’s needs were not addressed and he was discarded.

He crawls around on his stomach which causes irritation on his belly and calluses and sores on his legs.  He is going through an hour physical therapy twice a day, and is scheduled for electronic stimulation treatments to loosen up his leg muscles so he can be fitted for a wheelchair.

Example of Sparky's Physical Therapy

Through it all, Sparky has maintained the sunniest of personalities.   He is an affectionate boy who just loves to rest his head against a loving lap and appreciates nothing more than a day of chasing toys around in the grass.  He “scoots” after them with amazing grace and speed!  He knows life no other way and is not fazed by the abrasions he sustains with the simplest of movements.

Think of opening your heart to this sweet boy and if you are not able to adopt him, please sponsor Sparky so he can continue getting the treatment he needs so we can show him and even better life!
