RIP Sweet Murphy…

Our baby Murphy crossed over the rainbow bridge. He had a tumor on his heart and was experiencing cardiac failure and his health declined very rapidly.

I was pregnant when we found out and a few days later our baby girl Adelaide was born. As soon as we brought her home he got really sick and couldn’t eat or hold anything down. I truly believe he was just holding out to watch over me and make sure his sister made it here safely. He was able to make it almost two weeks but then he had to leave us.

He meant the world to us and we were and are so devastated by his passing.

I wanted to thank you for bringing him into our lives. There will never be a boy as incredible as he was. When Addy gets a little older we will get another dog and hope it will be from bulldog rescue.

Jackie was rescued last year from an owner who left her and another bulldog in the backyard all day long. She came into rescue filthy and starved for attention.

But Jackie had quite the turnaround, she was adopted by a wonderful woman and she is now the princess in the home!

Princess Jackie

Here’s a letter her new mom sent us…

“When I first saw Jackie, I have to say it was love at first sight and that we were meant to be together. I was so terrified that I would fail as a new mommy to this beautiful girl who did not know how to trust or love.

When I gave Jackie her first bath, I did it outside, I had her all lathered up and scrubbed from top to bottom and just as I reached for the hose to rinse her off, she bolted and ran straight into the house. Jackie, who hardly makes an effort to do much of anything, suddenly had a burst of energy and ran sliding from one end of the house to the other, stopping just long enough to jump on every piece of furniture we had leaving a trail of suds and water. I finally caught her, laughing and crying, knowing I had a huge clean-up job ahead of me, then she looked at me with trusting eyes as if to say, hey Mom that was fun, let’s do it again, and I smiled.

Jackie has become more than a pet to me; she is my companion, my friend and my shadow; some say I saved her life, but I know the reality is that she saved my life too.”

Dear Skip and So Cal Bulldog Rescue,

I wish to thank you everyone and especially Skip for making my life a lot more interesting , fun and livelier by rescuing Beasley from your organization.

Over 6 years a go Skip came to my place in Laguna Beach and approved me for a bully adoption.

Months later Skip called and Beasley was picked up for a trial weekend and immediately jumped into my car started smiling , looked around as we drove the % south and then laid down in my lap and started snoring… or fate together was sealed at that moment.

Leading up to and even days before Beasleys passing over Christmas weekend due to lymphoma , the So. Cal. bull dog rescue group was very helpful and gave excellent advice from all thing related to Beasley’s health and what is normal Bullys habits during the 5 + years.

Skip also directed me to Dr. Kraemer of Grand Pet Car center, Santa Ana. Dr. Kraemer turned out to be the best Bully Dr. one could hope for in So. Cal.

When your dog is in great health any Vet is helpful.

However, a world class Vet is one who takes care of both you and your bully when there is tough disease to deal with.

Dr. Kramer had compassion , interest and help us with special medication which made Beasley’s last few months both quality and a happy one.

I won’t go further other than to add we spent many, many dollars with a Vet in Dana Point who did not care care about Beasley’s quality of life at the end and only wished our credit card.

A heartfelt thank you Skip and the So Cal Bulldog rescue.

JRC

Piper in the car, leaving the shelter.

Piper was left at the shelter by her owner who requested that she be put to sleep. SCBR got the call to come get her and after speaking with the vet at the shelter, it is suspected that the owner knew something was wrong with her and chose to give up on her and let a stranger PTS rather than try to work with her medical problems.

Our volunteer picked her up and Piper barely had enough energy to get up and walk of out of her kennel. The volunteer happily picked her up and carried her to her car and drove her to our own rescue vet that afternoon. Piper was filthy…covered in feces, fleas and dirt. The whole car ride to the vet (almost an hour away) Piper could barely stay awake and stayed curled up in the passenger seat with her head as close to the volunteer as possible. She was scared and clearly ill. Upon arrival at the vet, she went straight into ICU. She weighed in at only 27 pounds, severely underweight The next day she threw up and collapsed and was immediately put on an IV to keep her stable. The entire time she drifted in and out of consciousness, struggling to hold on. It’s uncertain how much longer she would have survived in the shelter without medical attention.

Piper after her first bath.

Once she stabilized a bit, Piper began undergoing a long series of tests and evaluations. Based on the results of the initial bloodwork, Piper was prescribed hypoallergenic food, Prednisone and Metronidazole to help stop her diarrhea. After not seeing any change in the recurring diarrhea and no weight gain, Piper was taken to be evaluated by an internal specialist to receive an ultra sound and additional blood work. In the end, it was determined that Piper has Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) and also suffers from an autoimmune disease. In addition to what had already been prescribed, she was placed on Tylan powder, Vitamin K, Pepcid AC and Vitamin B12 injections. She was also placed on Imuran after receiving the last bit of results from the lab.

Piper is extremely underweight due to the IBD.

What is Irritable Bowel Disease?

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a disorder in which one or more sections of the gastrointestinal tract have become invaded with inflammatory cells. Over time, this inflammation causes the intestine to become less efficient at absorbing nutrients from digested food and weight loss, vomiting or diarrhea often result.

(info taken from Halo pets: http://www.halopets.com/pet-education/pet-articles/Inflammatory-Bowel-Disease-in-Dogs.html)

None of the medications were helping, so Piper was put back on the Metronidazole to help relieve the diarrhea a bit again.

In the end, none of the meds are really solving the problem. She still suffers from chronic diarrhea and her body is not retaining any of the nutrients or vitamins in the food she eats that are essential for a healthy lifestyle and weight gain. In addition to what she’s already been prescribed, her foster mom has put her on enzymes, vitamins and Hydrated Calcium Aluminosilicate Clay powder, as well as putting her on a diet of boiled chicken and rice.

Sadly, nothing is working still. The next step is to seek guidance from a Pet Nutritionist. Diet plays a key role in treating IBD and finding the right diet that works with Piper’s system will be a challenge. With the help of a Pet Nutritionist, we will hopefully find a diet that works for Piper and allows her body to correctly absorb the nutrients of the food so she can gain weight.

Piper is very ill and needs urgent help.

Your contribution will help pay for the large amount of medications and supplements she is on, her special diet, and the guidance from the Pet Nutritionist.

We have also found another doctor that specializes in immune issues that we hope to see soon.

Piper is truly a fighter. She’s got everything going against her and it’s shocking that she has made it this far. She isn’t giving up yet and neither are we. We will continue to work hard to find a solution to Piper’s problems so we can get her back to a healthy weight and she can live healthy and be adopted. We have been told her condition is very advanced but we will not give up.

Tyrone was brought into rescue in November 2011, and at first it seemed he would be an easy placement for placement in a forever home. He is a big lovable ‘teddy bear’ who gets along great with people and dogs alike!

Unfortunately, shortly after coming into rescue, it was discovered that Tyrone suffers from seizures and has malignant bone cancer, so he is staying in hospice care with his foster family. We are currently evaluating Tyrone for surgery to remove his cancerous leg which will alleviate his pain and greatly improve his quality of life, so he can enjoy whatever time he has left to the fullest. We hope that the cancer does not spread.

Tyrone’s favorite activities are stealing slippers, napping on the sofa, and keeping tabs on his people. Please consider sponsoring our ‘teddy bear’ so that this big handsome boy can make the most of the time he has left with us.

Seven year old Boomer was left in the overnight drop-box at the Simi Valley animal shelter and was subsequently transferred to the Camarillo shelter, where one of Rescue’s volunteers picked him up. The shelter was going to try adopt him out to the public, but then realized his medical needs were too complicated and expensive for their staff to handle, so they called Rescue to take him. Boomer had tumors on his paws and problems with one of his eyes. It is cloudy and he was evidently in a lot of pain.

While in loving foster care with Rescue, Boomer has had surgeries on his paws to remove and biopsy the tumors and treat his eye condition. He is on antibiotics and pain medication and must be fed very special food as he also suffers from allergies. Boomer will have to undergo yet another operation on his paws and may infact loose some of his toes. His foster mom must very carefully treat and wrap the sores on his paws daily as they are quite tender and he suffers so.

It was recently determined by veterinary pathologists that Boomer has stage 3 Mast Cell Cancer- just the worst news we could have expected. His foster mom, in particular, was devastated by the diagnosis. She is determined to do everything possible to show this boy the love and give him the most wonderful life in the time he has left.

Mr. Boomer is a loving and protective companion who deserves the very best we can give him. Please consider sponsoring him – you will know that you helped bring Boomer comfort and joy in the twilight of his life.

Elinore is 8 years old and was surrendered to the Riverside Animal Shelter. Her former owner was losing her home and she could no longer keep her animals. Elinore was severely malnourished – weighing only 35 pounds. A bulldog her size should normally weigh 45-50 pounds. After several tests, it was determined that Elinore suffers from kidney problems. She is on vitamins, renal support supplements, special diet and should only drink distilled water. Elinore also has only one eye – which was removed due to untreated eye infection.

The cost to feed, care for and maintain Elinore is approximately $500 per month. Elinore is slowly gaining weight and getting healthier, but she still needs your help. Please consider sponsoring this beautiful, one–eyed, senior girl.
