Darla

When Darla came into rescue from the shelter at 8 years old, she appeared to be reasonably healthy but clearly overbred. As it turns out she was hiding some secrets. She was having some kidney issues that led the vet to initially think she was in renal failure. After ruling that out, we saw she had at least 10 noticeable mammary tumors. The vet decided the easiest way to get rid of so many tumors was to do a radical mastectomy.

Darla made it through the surgery just fine, but her recovery has been anything but easy. Her body was not healing appropriately, and soon her stitches started to come out, leaving a huge hole in her tummy. She underwent another surgery to restitch the area, and her foster mom and her friend cleaned the wound twice daily, then wrapping her in a T-shirt and Ace bandages to keep the wound clean and to try to promote healing. Six weeks later, Darla is healing much better, but still is left with some opening of the wound. Last week, while getting her daily cleaning, her foster mom noticed a lump on her shoulder. She took her to the vet, and as it turns out, the lump is cancerous. Not a systemic kind of cancer, but it is something that needs to be removed immediately, so she will be undergoing yet another surgery this week to close up her mastectomy wound completely this time, she will also have entropion surgery done, and the tumor on her shoulder removed.

This poor girl has been through so much since being in Rescue, and we can’t even imagine what her life was like before, being used for nothing but a baby producer for someone to make a profit.

Please help us help her by sponsoring Darla so that the rest of her life can be lived pain free, comfortable, and with a heart full of love. She spent her life caring for her babies, and now it’s our turn to take care of her.

Tug

Tug is a gentle, tiny soul, weighing in at 34 lbs., who wants nothing more than to be with someone, anyone else. He doesn’t like to be left alone, but is perfectly content when with a human or another dog. Tug was picked up by Rescue from the shelter with a terrible case of demodex and clearly underweight.

As it turns out, those things were the least of his worries. When his foster mom got him home, she noticed him going out to relieve himself very frequently but couldn’t so she took him right to the vet. At just two years old, he’s had chronic untreated bladder infections for so long that he has developed two huge stones in his bladder. This causes him so much pain and that he can’t last through the night, and so relieves himself constantly throughout the day so his foster mom must keep pee pads down always and wash his bedding at least once a day. These stones must be removed as soon as possible, to make him more comfortable, but also because in males, they are particularly dangerous since they can become lodged in the urethra and require emergency surgery.

Please help us to help Tug live the life he was always meant to live, by choosing to sponsor him. Let us shower him with the kind of love he deserves.

Blondie

Blondie came into SCBR in early March after her family left her at a local shelter. They told the shelter that Blondie is three and a half years old and just stopped walking for no reason. It did not take long for the rescue workers to realize that Blondie was one special girl. She is a beautiful girl with lots of energy and love to give. She has a drive to move forward and doesn’t let her disability keep her down.

Blondie has been seen by both a neurologist and a rehabilitation center. Both agree that other than her inability to use her back legs, she is a healthy girl. They believe that the loss of mobility in her legs may be caused by L7-S1 spondylosis which is causing spinal cord compression. She also has many hemi-vertebrae in the middle of her spine that may also be causing spinal cord compression. To make matters worse, Blondie has bilateral medial luxating patellas – bad knees.

But even with so much going on, Blondie does not let it keep her down. She loves to roll around and play with the other foster dogs and go for rides in her wagon during early evening hours. She knows when it is time for dinner and is not afraid to ask for her food. Blondie’s is not incontinent, but until she can get a wheelchair to assist with getting around better, she wears a diaper in the house to ensure that she stays clean and dry when home alone.

Since SCBR cannot afford physical therapy for Blondie right now, her foster mom works on her exercises at home with her. SCBR and her foster mom hope to be able to raise the money to get Blondie a wheelchair and some additional physical therapy so that Blondie can get moving again. Blondie’s foster mom knows that there is a home out there waiting for this special girl.

Kanellah

Kanellah is a very sweet 3-year-old bulldog that was surrendered when her owners could no longer afford her medical care. She came into rescue with a very distended tummy and what looked to be fluid around her chest and mammary area.

After being treated by a specialist it has been determined that Kanellah was literally born with a broken heart. Both of her valves are deformed and she has thickening of the atrial wall on her left side. The fluid was built up all around her abdomen and organs. It has been draining with the help of diuretics and although much better, she still has a long way to go and her heart will never completely heal.

She is also on a couple of different heart meds and needs to be seen weekly by the heart specialist. We took her into our home to give her a loving place to be cared for until its time for her to visit her friends at Rainbow Bridge.

Kanellah is the sweetest little girl, with a lot of spunk. She loves to go for short walks, play with stuffed toys and she adores her foster daddy! She also likes to drool a lot (the diuretics make her thirsty)! Her dislikes include wearing her diaper, getting her wrinkles cleaned and any other dog that goes near her foster daddy!
Please help us as we help little Miss Kanellah live the rest of her life in peace, comfort and surrounded by love.

Charlie

Meet 9 month old Charlie. He’s been through a lot of rough stuff in his short life. He was used as a debt payment when he was very young. The family that received him soon saw that he had health problems and after a while the took him to a vet where he was diagnosed with Demodetic mange. The family didn’t know what to do, so after two months of being kept outside, they gave Charlie to Rescue. Initially, it wasn’t apparent how sick he was. Once Rescue had him evaluated by our vet and started treating him, the full extent of his problem was apparent.

In foster care, during his first bath, most of his hair fell out and he was an awful mess. His wonderful foster mom said “it’s okay, you’ll get worse before you get better”, so she wasn’t worried. It’s winter, and Charlie is bald now. Luckily, his foster mom knows where to shop, so she bought him some cool, trendy sweaters to keep warm. He is still quite itchy, and tends to rub against the furniture. He isn’t so well mannered, but his foster mom says he’ll be suitable for high society in no time! He loves to chew on antlers and to be with his people. If he can’t see them, Charlie will whine until he can.

This little pup needs all the help and love possible to grow into the wonderful family member he was born to be. Please help Rescue help little Charlie on his way to his forever home.

Butch

5/28/2001 – 12/02/2012

From the moment I saw his picture – white eyelashes, kind brown eyes, funny wrinkles, and an underbite not to be believed – I knew that he had found his forever home.

When I met him and saw his sweet disposition I knew that I had found the perfect dog! Was he actually the perfect dog? No, but he was perfect for our household. Personality plus, loyal, laid back, and loving – he made himself right at home.

I will miss your “Butchie” leaps when I arrive home – even after sometimes only being gone a few minutes; the way you would run (ok-waddle) around with your toy thinking that there was no way that I could get it from you; the way your stumpy tail would wag so fast when you were happy; the friendly face that would greet me at the door; the way you would plop in my lap when I sat on the floor… These are all things which cannot be replaced.

Your grandpa said that he has lost his best friend and companion. You were always there for him and he loved you for that and so much more.

They say that everything happens for a reason and I am so glad that somehow our lives came together and that the time we had was so special – albeit way too short.

Rest easy my wonderful boy – Butch, Butchie, Utchie, Bubba, Pickles (don’t know how that happened), and occasionally Poo-Paw (you know why…)

You are, and always will be, loved.

Brenda

RIP Butch, we are so grateful you found such a loving home to spend your golden years in.

As many of you have seen in the news, we recently acquired 12 English Bulldogs from the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter after they had been seized from their home by authorities. These dogs are now a part of the Southern California Bulldog Rescue family, joining approximately 70 other English Bulldogs already in our care and looking for homes. Many of these bulldogs, in addition to ones we have taken in outside of this situation, require a lot of time and effort to be made healthy and adoptable. Sadly, we see dogs come into rescue like this all the time, often in deplorable conditions, but their stories do not make the news as the Baldwin Park dogs did. This is every day in rescue. All of the care for these dogs comes as a great expense to Southern California Bulldog Rescue, which is currently handling over 80 English Bulldogs in its care right now. We are looking for assistance in caring for these dogs that desperately need medical care and rehabilitation to get their second chance in life and find new, loving homes. We are a 501 c(3) non-profit organization and rely entirely on donations to support us.

I want to help! What can I do?

Donate money through Crowdrise (http://www.crowdrise.com/nblb)

Check with your employer to see if they do matching donations (List of some here.)

Make your impact last longer with a recurring monthly pledge (More info here.)

Share the cause with your friends and family

Have your own fundraiser (bake sale, etc.) & donate the proceeds back to SCBR

Other creative ways can be found here.

What will the funds be used for?
Southern California Bulldog Rescue spends approximately $15,000 a month caring for the dogs in its care. These costs include, but are not limited, to the following:

I want to adopt a dog! How do I do that?
If you live in the Southern California area (excluding San Diego) and are interested in adopting an English Bulldog from us, please visit our website at www.socalbulldogrescue.org and fill out an application. All adoptions require an application, homecheck and adoption fee. Please note that we normally do not see healthy puppies in rescue and do not take applications just for puppies. We are currently accepting applications for adoptions of any of our 80 English Bulldogs currently in rescue.

At SCBR, we love each of our bullies as a child should be loved. We love them for the slobbering kisses that tell us what we do matter; we continue to love them because we know there is so much we have left to do; we love them more because someone ought to. You and SCBR can join hands and pull together to bring in donations of dog food, treats, toys, and supplies to make the holidays special for our rescue bulldogs! In-kind and general donations will be accepted at the monthly Adopt-A-Bulldog meet-and-greet on November 10.

Online and mail-in donations are cherished year-round; being a depend-a-bull hero is always in season!
