Rescue Dog: Darla

7 Apr

Darla

When Darla came into rescue from the shelter at 8 years old, she appeared to be reasonably healthy but clearly overbred. As it turns out she was hiding some secrets. She was having some kidney issues that led the vet to initially think she was in renal failure. After ruling that out, we saw she had at least 10 noticeable mammary tumors. The vet decided the easiest way to get rid of so many tumors was to do a radical mastectomy.

Darla made it through the surgery just fine, but her recovery has been anything but easy. Her body was not healing appropriately, and soon her stitches started to come out, leaving a huge hole in her tummy. She underwent another surgery to restitch the area, and her foster mom and her friend cleaned the wound twice daily, then wrapping her in a T-shirt and Ace bandages to keep the wound clean and to try to promote healing. Six weeks later, Darla is healing much better, but still is left with some opening of the wound. Last week, while getting her daily cleaning, her foster mom noticed a lump on her shoulder. She took her to the vet, and as it turns out, the lump is cancerous. Not a systemic kind of cancer, but it is something that needs to be removed immediately, so she will be undergoing yet another surgery this week to close up her mastectomy wound completely this time, she will also have entropion surgery done, and the tumor on her shoulder removed.

This poor girl has been through so much since being in Rescue, and we can’t even imagine what her life was like before, being used for nothing but a baby producer for someone to make a profit.

Please help us help her by sponsoring Darla so that the rest of her life can be lived pain free, comfortable, and with a heart full of love. She spent her life caring for her babies, and now it’s our turn to take care of her.

Rescue Dog: Tug

Tug

Tug is a gentle, tiny soul, weighing in at 34 lbs., who wants nothing more than to be with someone, anyone else. He doesn’t like to be left alone, but is perfectly content when with a human or another dog. Tug was picked up by Rescue from the shelter with a terrible case of demodex and clearly underweight.

As it turns out, those things were the least of his worries. When his foster mom got him home, she noticed him going out to relieve himself very frequently but couldn’t so she took him right to the vet. At just two years old, he’s had chronic untreated bladder infections for so long that he has developed two huge stones in his bladder. This causes him so much pain and that he can’t last through the night, and so relieves himself constantly throughout the day so his foster mom must keep pee pads down always and wash his bedding at least once a day. These stones must be removed as soon as possible, to make him more comfortable, but also because in males, they are particularly dangerous since they can become lodged in the urethra and require emergency surgery.

Please help us to help Tug live the life he was always meant to live, by choosing to sponsor him. Let us shower him with the kind of love he deserves.

Rescue Dog: Blondie

28 Mar

Blondie

Blondie came into SCBR in early March after her family left her at a local shelter. They told the shelter that Blondie is three and a half years old and just stopped walking for no reason. It did not take long for the rescue workers to realize that Blondie was one special girl. She is a beautiful girl with lots of energy and love to give. She has a drive to move forward and doesn’t let her disability keep her down.

Blondie has been seen by both a neurologist and a rehabilitation center. Both agree that other than her inability to use her back legs, she is a healthy girl. They believe that the loss of mobility in her legs may be caused by L7-S1 spondylosis which is causing spinal cord compression. She also has many hemi-vertebrae in the middle of her spine that may also be causing spinal cord compression. To make matters worse, Blondie has bilateral medial luxating patellas – bad knees.

But even with so much going on, Blondie does not let it keep her down. She loves to roll around and play with the other foster dogs and go for rides in her wagon during early evening hours. She knows when it is time for dinner and is not afraid to ask for her food. Blondie’s is not incontinent, but until she can get a wheelchair to assist with getting around better, she wears a diaper in the house to ensure that she stays clean and dry when home alone.

Since SCBR cannot afford physical therapy for Blondie right now, her foster mom works on her exercises at home with her. SCBR and her foster mom hope to be able to raise the money to get Blondie a wheelchair and some additional physical therapy so that Blondie can get moving again. Blondie’s foster mom knows that there is a home out there waiting for this special girl.

Rescue Dog: Kanellah

28 Mar

Kanellah

Kanellah is a very sweet 3-year-old bulldog that was surrendered when her owners could no longer afford her medical care. She came into rescue with a very distended tummy and what looked to be fluid around her chest and mammary area.

After being treated by a specialist it has been determined that Kanellah was literally born with a broken heart. Both of her valves are deformed and she has thickening of the atrial wall on her left side. The fluid was built up all around her abdomen and organs. It has been draining with the help of diuretics and although much better, she still has a long way to go and her heart will never completely heal.

She is also on a couple of different heart meds and needs to be seen weekly by the heart specialist. We took her into our home to give her a loving place to be cared for until its time for her to visit her friends at Rainbow Bridge.

Kanellah is the sweetest little girl, with a lot of spunk. She loves to go for short walks, play with stuffed toys and she adores her foster daddy! She also likes to drool a lot (the diuretics make her thirsty)! Her dislikes include wearing her diaper, getting her wrinkles cleaned and any other dog that goes near her foster daddy!

Please help us as we help little Miss Kanellah live the rest of her life in peace, comfort and surrounded by love.

Food $50/mo
Diapers & wipes $50/mo
Visits to the specialists $750

Rescue Dog: Charlie

Charlie

Meet 9 month old Charlie. He’s been through a lot of rough stuff in his short life. He was used as a debt payment when he was very young. The family that received him soon saw that he had health problems and after a while the took him to a vet where he was diagnosed with Demodetic mange. The family didn’t know what to do, so after two months of being kept outside, they gave Charlie to Rescue. Initially, it wasn’t apparent how sick he was. Once Rescue had him evaluated by our vet and started treating him, the full extent of his problem was apparent.

In foster care, during his first bath, most of his hair fell out and he was an awful mess. His wonderful foster mom said “it’s okay, you’ll get worse before you get better”, so she wasn’t worried. It’s winter, and Charlie is bald now. Luckily, his foster mom knows where to shop, so she bought him some cool, trendy sweaters to keep warm. He is still quite itchy, and tends to rub against the furniture. He isn’t so well mannered, but his foster mom says he’ll be suitable for high society in no time! He loves to chew on antlers and to be with his people. If he can’t see them, Charlie will whine until he can.

This little pup needs all the help and love possible to grow into the wonderful family member he was born to be. Please help Rescue help little Charlie on his way to his forever home.

Rescue Dog: Yeager

3 Sep

Yeager

Yeager is a four year old boy surrendered to a shelter by an owner who claimed to have no time for him. Just as soon as he arrived it became obvious that his former owner not only had no time for him, but neglected his health needs for years beforehand. Yeager’s eyes were red and swollen, his ears horribly infected and he was so anxious and stressed by being abandoned, he took to panicking and panting heavily, while scanning every face that passed by his kennel in hopes his owner, the person he loved and trusted unconditionally, had returned for him.

As soon as Rescue picked him up from the shelter, his anxiety caused him to hyperventilate to the point that he stopped breathing and turned blue and had to be rushed to the vet for monitored IV care. Once stabilized, Yeager also had to undergo soft palate; four lid entriopion and neuter surgeries. After his surgeries, he went home with a wonderful Rescue foster volunteer who had to hand feed him so he was able to consume and swallow at the right pace. When he has recovered from his first battery of procedures, he will need to undergo a bilateral ear ablation which will alleviate the pain he has been suffering from infections left untreated for extended periods, and will also render him completely deaf.

After a short period in foster care, Yeager is healing physically and emotionally and has already forged a strong bond with his loving foster mom. He follows her around everywhere and is never more than an arms length away from her. This poor boy has suffered so much at the hands of the person he trusted to care for him for his lifetime. Please help Rescue get Yeager the medical care he needs and consider sponsoring him so we can find him the right forever home and family to call his own that will understand that this special boy just wants love and he will give back so much more in return.

Initial exam and blood work: $150
Monitored IV care and stabilizing treatment: $300
Soft palate, entropion, and neuter surgeries: $860
Ear ablation: $2,250
Food: $50/month

Rescue Dog: Lulu

2 Aug

Lulu

Little Lulu is a 1 1/2 year old girl who was surrendered to Rescue by her owners when her medical care became too costly for them to continue. When she arrived, Lulu was unable to walk and was incontinent. Her owner admitted to trying to breed her by artificial insemination which resulted in a miscarriage.

Due to her physical condition, there was little hope and it was initially thought that, in her best interest, she had to be euthanized. After just a few days with Rescue’s volunteers, Lulu’s vivaciousness and joyous personality emerged and it was evident that she just needed an opportunity to work through her physical problems to lead a fulfilling life. One of Rescue’s most dedicated volunteers decided to taken on Lulu’s care and has spent much time taking her to various doctors for evaluation to try and determine just what is wrong with her.

After a thorough veterinary examination including X-rays, it was determined that Lulu suffers from hemivertebrae, which is a congenital birth defect causing wedge shaped vertebra to compress and angle the spine resulting in instability of the spinal column leading to nerve damage and possible fractures. The vet also concluded that Lulu has a “soft” bladder – meaning that the urine flows out easily versus a “hard” bladder where it is difficult to excrete the urine – which apparently is unrelated to her spinal problem. The vet believes that there is something else that is causing Lulu’s incontinence. It could be a disc injury from when she was artificially inseminated or when she miscarried, or subsequently, when she was spayed and the incisions closed with metal staples, damaging her bladder.

After the initial vet consultation, Lulu was taken to California Animal Rehabilitation (CARE) in Santa Monica where doctors further tested her to try and ascertain just what the issue is with her back legs. It was determined that Lulu is in fact not paralyzed, she simply cannot feel her rear legs, indicating there was some type of nerve damage she sustained. The therapists continued their evaluation and found areas on her legs that do have sensitivity and responded to their stimulation. Lulu and our volunteer were sent home with a list of over a dozen exercises to do twice daily.

It is still too soon to tell, but the CARE vets believe that Lulu’s issues may be conditions that can be fixed, or at least improved and stabilized so she can live a full and happy life in an adoptive home that understands her special needs. With regular in-home therapy, requiring a special harness, acupuncture, a good diet with supplements and daily medications, our volunteers have already seen a marked improvement in Lulu’s mobility. She is standing more and is steadier when upright to the point that she is now able to take a few steps. The physical therapist believes that she would greatly benefit from a wheelchair as moving around in it would help her use her rear legs and increase her mobility.

The vets at CARE have been very generous and have given Rescue a discounted rate for their services, but her treatment is still very costly. While Lulu’s care and re-habilitation require a tremendous amount of time, and a good deal of money, we feel that it is all very well spent to give this girl the chance she deserves. Please consider sponsoring her to make this possible.

Remembering Shelby

25 Jul

We had to say goodbye to Shelby, a girl that touched quite a few hearts during her time with us in rescue. Shelby was abandoned at the shelter by her owner, unable to walk on her own, malnourished and filthy. SCBR picked her up and took her to one of our vets who immediately identified that she had a condition known as Hemivertebrae, which basically meant that some of the vertebrae on her spine didn’t form correctly and looked almost like little butterflies.

She went into a foster home with not only an amazing family, but with other foster bulldogs to have as her buddies. One of the funniest things about Shelby was that ALL the foster dogs that always came in the house seemed to want to share Shelby’s bed and she would always scoot over and accommodate them. All the dogs seemed to love her as much as all the people who ever met her did. She has a sweet soul and loved to be cuddled like a little baby in your lap. She quickly became known as the princess of the house, everyone just adored her.

Sadly, after almost a year in her home, and many visits to the doctors and lots of tests, Shelby seemed begin being uncomfortable. On top of the vertebrae problem, doctors believed she may have had a tumor in her spine that was beginning to cause pressure and pain with Shelby. It was at this point that her foster family had to make the decision to let her go across the bridge so she wouldn’t be in anymore pain.

Shelby took a lot of effort to care for in the time that she was with us and her foster family, especially her momma Tami, gave her unconditional care and love. We are so grateful for them never giving up on her and giving her a place for her to call home and most importantly, a family of her own that loved her immensely. Shelby was very lucky to have found them and we’re so thankful to her family for providing her with care and love until the day we had to say goodbye to her.

We know she’s happily running around with all the other bullies across the bridge, especially her former foster brother Boomer. We love and miss you so very much Shelby and will see you again one day.

RIP Shelby.

Rescue Dog: Nina

13 Jun

Nina

Nina is a two year old little girl who came to Rescue in desperate condition. She was pregnant, severely underweight and malnourished and suffering from Demodex, an enlarged heart, fleas and worms. Because she was pregnant, she could initially only be treated for her heart condition and parasites, and receive regular baths to soothe her raw, itchy skin. Nina gave birth to six puppies, of mixed breed (the famous Jazz pups) and was too compromised health-wise to properly care for her babies – enter Rescue’s exceedingly dedicated volunteers for round-the-clock care and bottle feeding for all every two hours for four weeks.

Nina recovered from the pregnancy and started her Demodex treatments. She is coming along well and her fur is filling in nicely, though she may have some areas that will not grow fur due to the severity of the damage to the hair follicles. Nina has gained back a good amount of weight…her foster mom is careful to keep her trim and healthy. She will need to be on heart medication for the rest of her life, but with tender loving care she should thrive. All but two of the “Jazz” pups have found their forever homes, and the others are sure to follow soon.

If you are not in a position to adopt, consider sponsoring Nina so Rescue can continue with her care and her story can have a happy ending.

Rescue Dog: Ramaya

13 Jun

Ramaya

Ramaya is a tiny 14 month old puppy who was cast aside after her owner’s had a baby. She was relegated to the garage where she found and ate rat poison. Her owner took her to the emergency vet but decided to surrender her to Rescue because of the cost of care.

Ramaya was taken in by Rescue’s vet not only suffering from the effects of poisoning but also severely underweight, with Demodex and an enlarged heart from an untreated heart condition. After she was stabilized, she went into a loving foster home where she is now in the midst of her recovery which is anticipated to take about three months, after which she should be healthy enough to find her forever home.

Ramaya has begun to come into her own and has taken to playing with her stainless steel water bowl. She causes a racket by tossing it up in the air and dragging it across her kennel door for attention. She obviously has a big personality for such a little girl and an indomitable spirit. Ramaya’s fur is beginning to grow back and her wonderful, patient foster mom is teaching her manners for living in a home and showing her that people can give her the attention and love she deserves.

If her story has touched you, please think of sponsoring little Ramaya, so Rescue can continue helping her in her recovery and find her a loving forever home.
